Bonded Abrasives Introduction
Bonded abrasives are a mixture of abrasives grains, fillers and bonding materials. Bonded abrasives products are abrasives tools made of abrasives grains closely pressed and shaped together with bonding agent and fillers into a vast variety of grinding wheels, sticks, blocks and other sizes/shapes for cutting, lapping, grinding, sharpening, polishing and surface preparation of different workpiece. The abrasives grains are usually Brown Fused Alumina, White Fused Alumina, Garnet, Pink Fused Alumina, Zirconia Fused Alumina, Silicon Carbide etc. Bonding agent can be clay, vitreous, rubber, plastic, epoxy etc. There are two main types of bonded abrasives divided by the bonding agent used: Vitrified Bonded Abrasives & Resin Bonded Abrasives. And typical fillers are iron pyrites, cryolite and other materials. The mixed materials are usually calcined under high temperature so that the finished product become chemically stable and physically shaped.
Bonded abrasives tools can be different shapes and structures depending on the mould used when mixing the raw materials. This is to apply for surface of different materials and parts of the workpieces, gear, roll, ball etc. And bonded abrasives tools can be of different colors depending on the abrasives grains used. For example, tools made of Brown Fused Alumina is usually dark brown.
